English language requirements

Bachelor's studies All applicants to bachelor's studies are required to document their proficiency in English – even if the native language of their country of study is English. Generally, there are three ways to meet the English requirement: 1. through certain upper secondary studies; 2. through certain university studies (if you already hold a Bachelor's degree); 3. by a successful result on an approved English test. Some completed upper secondary studies in certain countries are enough to demonstrate that you meet the English requirement. If your country is not one of them, you'll need to submit test scores from an internationally recognised English test. It's also possible to meet the requirement with university studies. Master's studies All students who wish to study a Master’s programme in Sweden must document that they meet the English requirements for the programme. Even students with English as their first language must document that they meet the requirement for the programme they've applied for. Generally, there are three ways to meet the English requirement: 1. through certain upper secondary studies; 2. through certain university studies (through courses taken in your Bachelor's studies); 3. by a successful result on an approved English test. In general, students who have completed a bachelor’s degree where the language of instruction was English, or where English was the main subject, do not need to submit test scores. You can even meet the requirement through upper secondary studies. An option for all students is to submit a test score that meets the requirement from an internationally recognised test, such as TOEFL or IELTS. Meeting English requirements with an English test You can always demonstrate your English proficiency with an internationally recognised test. University admissions accepts a number of different tests, with minimum score requirements. Here are the required results for the tests most frequently submitted by applicants as guidance. Understanding Swedish courses and levels
(generally for Bachelor's applications only)

To meet the specific entry requirements for most Swedish courses and programmes, you must have studied certain subjects at a certain level equivalent to Swedish. Even if you have the same number of years of studies in a subject, you may still not meet the requirements. Specific entry requirements list the upper secondary Swedish courses you must have the equivalent of from your previous studies. Swedish upper secondary courses have a number after them; the higher the number, the higher the level (and in most cases time) you must have studied. Courses can have different number ranges – some go up to 7, while others to 2. Here are some examples. Mathematics In Sweden, you can study upper secondary mathematics from level 1 to 5. For Mathematics 1, it's usually enough to have passed mathematics at an upper secondary school. For Mathematics 4 or 5, you would need to have specialised in mathematics. Note that even then, you may not meet the requirement. Science In the Swedish upper secondary school, Natural Science 1 and 2 are general science courses that are at a lower level and studied by most students. They include several science subjects. Students can also study the specific subjects Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at the 1 and 2 level. All of these courses are at a higher level than Natural Science. In order to have the equivalent, you usually must have specialised in the subject in upper secondary school. Note that even then, you may not meet the requirement. Social Sciences In Sweden, students can study Social Studies 1 and 2, and History 1 and 2 in upper secondary school. To meet the requirement, you must have studied: social studies for Social Studies 1 and 2 history for History 1 and 2 one or more general subjects within humanities/social science that to a large extent contain the required subject (social studies or history). Modern languages Studying modern languages at upper secondary school in Sweden means studying a language that isn’t Swedish, English, classical Greek, classical Latin or sign language. You can study a modern language from level 1 to 7. Some bachelor’s courses in Sweden require the equivalent of a Swedish modern language course, at a level from 1 to 7.
