MEET OUR MENTORS
Hi there!
I am Cristina, a MSc graduate of Jönköping University in southern Sweden. I am also a former holder of the Swedish Institute Scholarship for Global Professionals (SISGP) and a proud member of the Swedish Institute Network for Future Global Leaders. I have always valued the power of education and its potential to transform people's lives. Sweden is a perfect example of a country and society that started its own transformation through education – to soon grow into world's most reputable country with the highest ranks in just about everything – quality of life, academic excellence, human rights, child welfare, sustainability and innovation, and other indices. Moving to Sweden to pursue my Master’s degree was probably the most defining experience of my life that shaped me both professionally and personally. I made the most of my time as an international Master's student there: gained high-quality knowledge and leadership skills, became academically curious, developed critical thinking, built a strong multicultural and professional network, identified my career path, traveled across Scandinavia, made great friends and memories. I still remember the day I received that email and found out I was awarded a fully-funded scholarship from the Swedish Institute to pursue my Master's studies in Sweden. This was after several weeks of scrupulous hunt for academic programmes and application preparation – started after months of growing dissatisfaction with my path and career trajectory and a longing for some radical changes. I was over the moon about the news. But I also knew there was going to be much more to it than just another study experience. Already during my first week in Sweden, it all started to just make sense. Somehow, this far Nordic country of just 10 million inhabitants held all the answers I have been searching for. I got fascinated by this country that welcomes, inspires, and nurtures its every single member – inclusive, diverse, equal, fair, green, innovative, and so much more. I got inspired by the Swedish lifestyle and the Swedish people – originators, innovators, creators, food and coffee lovers, green thinkers, and humble world leaders. I simply knew my connection with Sweden was going to last. Today I work in academia and help prospective students from all over the world discover Sweden – not only as a great study destination – but also as a society to experience and get inspired by. Read about my Swedish experience in the recent interview with the Swedish Institute featured in my bio.
Hello future student!
I am Robin, a MSc graduate of Jönköping University International Business School and a co-Founder of Educonsult Sweden. The idea to set up this agency originated almost inevitably following our study experience in Sweden – which was remarkable in many ways – and the willingness to support those who are interested in pursuing their degree studies in this exciting Scandinavian country. I still remember applying for a Master’s programme in Digital Business at Jönköping University in Sweden back in 2018 and what formed my decision to undertake this path. Let me share with you why I chose Sweden and why it might be exactly the experience you are looking for as well. I was fortunate enough to be raised in a family that always stressed the importance of radical open-mindedness towards the unknown. I was taught to treat every individual equally and that traveling is the best way to expand your horizon and learn from different cultures. Before I moved to Sweden, I had got the opportunity to live in 5 countries for an extended period of time (Canada, China, Netherlands, Colombia, Sweden, and Italy). Since living abroad was something I always enjoyed and wanted to experience in the future, applying for a study programme in Sweden was a logical consequence for me. ‘Why Sweden?’, you might ask. Let’s start with the fact that all Swedes I had met prior to my studies were among the most kind and friendly people but also incredibly open-minded and naturally curious about other nationalities and ways of living. Moreover, I wanted to study in a truly international environment in order to have access to different people and expand my network. When you spend a year or two studying in a different country, you get to know people from all over the world every day. Sweden is perfect in this regard since most university programmes there have very diverse groups of students. Moreover, Sweden has one of the top Higher Education systems in the world and provides first-class experience for its students. Talking about internationality, this does not simply ends with students. It also applies to professors – which is something that enriches you in ways you wouldn’t expect. Personally, I had professors from Germany, Pakistan, India, Sweden, UK and many other countries during my time as a student there. My biggest realization was that there are so many different ways of teaching content. Professors had approaches that ranged from presentations to panel discussions, design thinking workshops, etc. On your journey, you will discover that Swedish universities are among the best when it comes to teaching and challenging your ways of thinking and learning. Different students respond to different learning styles, and you will be exposed to all of them. Another important aspect for me was the support students receive around entrepreneurship and innovation initiatives. Unlike Germany, where I come from and where there is oftentimes a high level of inertia and resistance towards innovation (“we always did it this way, let’s not change it”), Sweden, on the other hand, encourages students to think innovatively and outside the box. There is a lot of support for those who want to try out new ways and blank canvas to bring in new ideas. For example, many Swedish universities have private accelerators as their part. These accelerators help students clarify their vision and business plans and also provide mentors that guide you through legal and accounting matters. Do you want to start a business during or after your studies? Then Sweden is the right choice for you! Finally, universities are well connected to governmental bodies as well as public and private companies. In the course of my studies, there were many lectures held by governmental and corporate officials which provided a crucial view of existing problems from a more practical perspective. You will have access to many people, get the chance to ask private questions, and share your ideas and solutions. Some other highlights of my Swedish experience were the opportunity to do an exchange semester and internship abroad, and write your thesis with a company of choice (you might very well end up working for consequently!). In Sweden, everything is closely connected and people are very eager to help you and listen to your ideas. Take full advantage of this! Do you have ideas that make this world a better place? Work on them, share them, get crucial feedback, be bold! Who knows what might result from a brief conversation with the right person at the right time. Today, I work as a full-time consultant for Deloitte. Professionally, betting on Sweden has paid off for me in terms of my career trajectory. With EduConsult Sweden, my goal is to support and mentor students who wish to take a similar path and explore everything Sweden has to offer. Lastly, there are many more aspects that speak for Sweden. I know that education is an important topic and one of the major investments that most people take in their lifetime. You can trust me as someone who was doing diligent research myself when choosing the right study destination and subject. You can’t go wrong with Sweden. Make up your mind, if you need support we are here to make your Swedish Adventure happen!
